BLUE RADIATION trades language for sensation, guiding listeners through warped dimensions of radiant noise. Recorded during the pandemic at our garage in a weirdly quiet São Paulo, these ten tracks—nine instrumental pieces and a slower, heavier version of ‘The Black Hole’—unfold like visions from another world: angular, spectral, iridescent.

Firefriend | Blue Radiation (2025, mixed colour). This is one of the top tier psychedelic rock bands in the world. Because they basically go for it in creating mind-altering sounds and rhythms and at times basically a noise band but with strong songwriting. Like a shoegaze band that was influenced heavily by Black Sabbath and maybe Bardo Pond, Sleep and the like. This is all live stuff from 2020 to 2022. If previously released these versions veer off into different tonal places. I have most of their records and they're all cool. I feel a kinship with what this band is doing because it's songs are also political, I'd say leftist, and smart. The song titles alone say a lot. They're from São Paulo, Brazil and have seen heavy political situations go down. That gives the music a sense of genuinely subversive energy and breaking with convention. Hope to see them someday. I included bits of "Behavioral Futures Market" and "Five Eyes," I believe. This record is more experimental in its soundscapes than the other record Firefriend put out this year but both are amazing. Firefriend | Fuzz (2025, red in black vinyl). This record is more rock song oriented but still the weird, wild and dangerous sound that makes this band so cool. This sounds like the studio album because the sonics are more forward. Clearly also political and aiming at the corrupt government and unfortunate social situations. I included clips of "Spearhead" and "Raw Violence."

A banda paulistana Firefriend lança agora dois discos ao mesmo tempo, que soam como álbuns complementares. BLUE RADIATION é o mais surpreendente e desconcertante deles: foi gravado ainda na época da pandemia, na garagem da banda em São Paulo, e expande o rock de garagem de Julia Grassetti (baixo e vocais), Ricardo Cifas (bateria), Pinhead (synths e teclados) e Yury Hermuche (guitarra e vocais) para outros lugares, bem mais estranhos. Boa parte do repertório é formado por drones assustadores criados com guitarra, baixo e bateria, e por colagens sonoras.
BEHAVIORAL FUTURES MARKET começa com um barulho que lembra as cordas rangendo do fim de Magic pie, do Oasis – e prossegue numa vibe ruidosa e misteriosa, que pega também os ruídos de EXCESS, a segunda música. Daí para a frente, a vibe de BLUE RADIATION lembra um desdobre lo-fi dos improvisos de Electric ladyland (1968), de Jimi Hendrix Experience, ou o clima quase sobrenatural de Persona (1975), aquele disco feito para acompanhar o jogo de mesmo nome da Grow.
UNEXPECTED VISITOR tem sons misteriosos no canal esquerdo, e jazz tocado na guitarra no direito. INTERZONE e FIVE EYES são basicamente acid rock passado num filtro pós-punk – um pós-punk que foi ouvir Módulo 1000 em vez de Public Image Ltd, diga-se. BLUE RADIATION e INTO THE BLACK HOLE têm atmosfera fantasmagórica lembrando Tangerine Dream.
FUZZ, o outro do Firefriend, é basicamente um disco de rock garageiro e perigoso, às vezes na cola do Velvet Underground e dos Stooges, às vezes com raízes em Black Rebel Motorcycle Club e My Bloody Valentine. SPEARHEAD, na abertura, tem a manha tanto do rock de garagem quanto a do doom metal. HOLOGRAM é associada ao lado mais trevoso do britpop, com metais que dão sensação de estranhamento e distorções como parte da melodia. KILL SWITCH é o lado pré-punk e glam rock do grupo. RAW VIOLENCE é psicodélica e introspectiva, mas tem algo de energia beatle na melodia.
Já DECREATION FACTS e APOPHIS representam fielmente a tal união de Velvet e My Bloody que está nas raízes do disco. Uma surpresa é MOST NATURAL PAINKILLER, que tem algo de Oasis e The Verve, mas passando pelo filtro maldito e garageiro do grupo. Ouça os dois em sequência.
